Trophies Over The Ages

by Al Choo on February 25, 2010

Trophies not only stand for victory but also provide people with reminders of the achievement and act as a memento for them. It keeps the owner enthralled and motivated for a long time to come. This is why the trophy is normally created to reflect the field in which the winner has accomplished something, like the engraving of a wrestler on a trophy from that particular field.

Initially, trophies were used as identifiers of victory of the winning army in the war field and were erected on the field itself. The practice started in Greece when the war descriptions were inscribed on the enemy’s weapons and were displayed by the winning army as marks of victory. These were offered to the deities for helping the army fight the battle successfully. Actually the origin of the word trophy lies in the Greek term for defeat – ‘tropaion’.

Romans had a different way of displaying their victory through trophies. They used huge pillars and stands which would bear the sculpted trophy high up for the whole world to witness and admire. In later years, the kings and monarchs started giving out chalices to the best performing athletes in the kingdom.

Designing a trophy is not as easy as it might look at first. Just like other design jobs, even trophy designing requires a great deal of analysis, market study and a thorough consideration of the elements to be used. A trophy should not just be elegant but also strong enough to stay safe for years as a cherished possession of the winner.

These days, trophies are awarded for great performance in a lot of fields like sports, academics, business etc. Trophies are found in many sizes and styles with various kinds of inscriptions. The conventional metal design atop a wooden base has morphed into silver, gold or glass finish as well as designs of crystal. Buyers now have a wide range of trophies varying in shape, size and models to select from. With the number of choices available, purchasing the right trophy for an occasion is not a tough job anymore.
