Are You Trying To Learn French?

by Emily Hardacre on August 29, 2010

Learning a language does not have to be stressful. It’s really quite a bit of fun if you don’t make it into a chore! Focus on the opportunities that speaking another language can bring. When you travel, it can make you much more at ease. Even at home, there’s a good chance it will enable you to speak to more people. You are also required to know another language for many jobs today. The language that is used the most in the United States, next to English, is French.

Depending on where in the U.S. you are, French may be spoken as much as English, if not more. Knowing how to speak and translate French into other languages is a valuable skill to have.

Keeping some patience in mind will help. You won’t be speaking French fluently in several days. Even if you have a perfect memory and can remember all of your vocabulary and conjugations, you might still have some problems stringing together a sentence correctly. Your progress will suffer if you try to become fluent too quickly and put pressure on yourself. So allow yourself to slowly learn. You’ll feel more comfortable with the language. It’s also good to learn slowly is because people will have more patience with you if they know you’re trying to learn their language. You need to be careful so you don’t offend anyone. Finding good french language programs is a great idea too.

Register for a french language programs course. Some people are uncomfortable to learn French with other people. Courses usually involve speaking the language out loud as you learn it in front of the other students in the class. This intimidates many people.

But it’s still a great idea to do it even if you make mistakes. What better way to learn how to properly speak French than in a class where everybody else is still learning as well? You can all make the same mistakes together. And that is a lot better than talking to a local, making some insulting mistake, and not being forgiven.

Watch movies and television shows that are in French. This is easy because there are plenty of French TV broadcasts, and most movie rental stores keep a foreign language section. Watching these shows and movies can help you learn to understand French the way it is actually spoken without having to spend money to travel somewhere. And this will help you if you cannot have access to anyone who speaks French. To begin, you can watch with subtitles. As your understanding improves, try turning them off and see how you do. You can accelerate your learning by doing this exercise.

Learning French or any new language does not have to be so painful. The beginning may be a little rough, but in time it does get a lot better. You will become fluent if you persist and make good use of as many tricks and tips as possible.
